Historical Context

The "Hairy Mary": This is the classic cold-war era British Army shirt, affectionately (and hatefully) known by soldiers as the "Hairy Mary" due to its scratchy wool-blend fabric.

Northern Ireland Era: The "A78" spec code and "Ladybird Belfast" maker mark place this firmly in the era of Operation Banner (The Troubles). It was standard issue to troops patrolling Northern Ireland in the 1970s, worn under the 1968 Pattern DPM Smock and with '58 Pattern Webbing.

Ladybird Belfast: While famous for children's clothing, the Ladybird factory in Belfast held major military contracts during the 70s. Finding unissued examples from this specific factory is becoming difficult.
